We have not said very much about technology to this point in the journey. Many people have strong opinions about this subject. I know this because I have heard them. Let us get this topic out of the way.

Overview

Technology has driven much of the real productivity gains in the world in recent years. Bar codes, radio frequency (RF) scanners, radio frequency identification devices (RFID), and automated material handling equipment are just a few of the technological advances that have affected the stores areas in our manufacturing facilities. In every case, these devices have improved the lives of the users and the integrity of the operation. But do not be fooled. Just as the manager who thinks that ERP software will deliver an ERP process is disappointed, so is the manager who relies on bar codes alone to solve the accuracy problems.

Any technology works well when people follow the process design. There are few applications where process technology is so foolproof that even exceptions are handled with ease. On the other hand, there are few processes without exceptions.

I have been in many warehouses where bar code scanners were sold internally as the answer to the accuracy problems. I would like a nickel for every time I have been told, Oh, if we could just get the new scanners to read the bar code on the trucks, we wouldn t have these accuracy issues.
