About this Book
This book introduces operating systems concepts and tools through examples implemented on the VAX/VMS operating system. For example, Chapter 3 presents a program that mimics an alarm clock and describes how it runs within the context of the operating system. Chapter 4 shows how the statement order of a small program changes execution time from a few seconds to several minutes because thrashing is introduced. Chapter 5 presents two programs that impersonate Romeo and Juliet illustrating how two processes can communicate; and Chapter 6 presents two programs that share data in a single critical region. Lastly, Chapter 8 presents an example program illustrating the use of asynchronous system traps (ASTs).
Organization
Each chapter is organized so that its central concept is introduced by one or more diagrams together with a theoretical discussion and variations including generally recognized solutions and algorithms. These preparatory sections are not directed at a particular operating system. Next, the chapter provides a detailed C example using the concept and illustrating implementation details the algorithms and data structures employed by the VMS operating system. Each chapter concludes with a section outlining additional issues that are related to the central concept. This section briefly discusses alternate approaches that could be used by the operating system designer. Each chapter is accompanied by short answer exercises (with solutions), programming projects, and suggestions for research papers.
Chapter 1 is an introduction centering on one visible aspect of any interactive operating system terminal output. This introductory material will lay the groundwork for future chapters.
