Chapter 5: Editing

Recording, editing and mixing. The more I think about how I actually use Pro Tools, the more I realize that, for me, these three processes are very often intertwined and overlapping. As with the chapter on Recording, I will introduce several of the features you will use for editing within Pro Tools before looking at some actual step-by-step examples.

New features and short cuts in Pro Tools 5.1

The programmers working on the software s user-interface have definitely been putting some thought into how to speed up the way everything works in version 5.1 compared with previous versions of Pro Tools. For example, the cursor quadrant has been expanded to let you zoom audio and MIDI separately and there are five zoom levels available on buttons underneath so you can always get to your favourite zoom levels quickly. In the Transport window a counters view has been added so you can work in the Mix window and know where you are. The MIDI controls can also be hidden if you don t need these.

There are now two counters in the Edit window Main and Sub so you can see Bars:Beats and Time Code, or Feet:Frames and Minutes:Seconds (or whatever combination you like) at the same time. Also, you can set the Grid to one value and the Nudge value to a different value and the display below this shows parameters such as the MIDI note number in a MIDI track, or the exact level in decibels of the volume data.
