Pro Tools 5.1 for Music Production: Recording, Editing, and Mixing

There are four MIDI + Audio sequencers which you are likely to encounter on Macintosh computers. Two of these, Studio Vision and Digital Performer, come from the USA, while the other two, Logic Audio and Cubase VST, are from Hamburg in Germany. All of these can be used in one way or another with Pro Tools systems. All except Cubase VST provide direct TDM compatibility. However, Cubase VST can interface with Digidesign MIX systems and the Digi 001 using ASIO Digidesign DirectIO technology to provide up to 32 channels of I/O.
Musicians working with MIDI will often choose one or other of these packages as the front-end for their Pro Tools hardware in preference to the Pro Tools software. This is a practical option, as TDM compatibility provides access to the full range of TDM plug-ins from within these applications. Cubase VST is the odd one out here. TDM compatibility was available in Cubase Audio some years ago, but has not been made available for Cubase VST. Logic Audio Platinum supports the widest range of options for audio I/O, including TDM compatibility, ASIO DirectIO, and Digidesign s DirectConnect which feeds the audio directly into the Pro Tools mixer.
