Location and Personalisation: Delivering Online and Mobility Services

BT has a rich history of developing a number of highly successful knowledge-management tools going back several years. Many of these tools already use personalisation to improve the quality of information delivered to the end user.
A number of BT's knowledge-management tools and research projects are described briefly below, with particular emphasis given to their use of profiling.
ViewSum is a text-summarisation tool that can provide a personalised summary of any document. Depending on the user's needs, it can summarise the document to any required length even to a single sentence or set of keywords. It can also exploit the user's profile to tailor the summary to the individual user.
ProSum is the text-summarisation software component from which ViewSum is built, and which has been incorporated into a number of other BT knowledge-management tools.
ProSearch [5] software agents find and filter relevant information that matches a user's interests. ProSearch can search the World Wide Web, a company intranet, news groups, on-line news sources and more.
As such it will search these sources based on the user's profile and then filter the results by removing duplicates, documents already seen by the user, and documents that are referenced but no longer exist, thus overcoming a number of user frustrations with 'traditional' search engine technology.
Consequently ProSearch presents a set of relevant, checked documents that the user has not yet read.
