Managing Software Deliverables: A Software Development Management Methodology

Chapter 5: SEP Phase IV Construction Phase

Overview

During this phase, the development or engineering team executes project plans according to the detailed specifications generated in the previous phase. It is here the Alpha and Beta versions of the product are released. Let s look at the SEP Phase IV roadmap (Figure 5.1).

Figure 5.1: SEP Phase IV Roadmap.

The first step in the roadmap requires that the Core Team review the SEP Phase IV deliverables checklist. As you can see in Figure 5.2, there is not a lot of mandatory work to be done; however, you should not be fooled by this. Remember the Project Transition Letter. The project was turned over to the development/engineering team for continued work, and they have a much more work-intensive process underway at this point in the project.

As we follow the path of the roadmap for this phase, the next step in the process is creating all user manuals. Based on specifications documents and concurrent development, work on all product manuals should not be saved until the completion of development. Manuals should reflect all changes processed through the Change Management Process (CMP).

5.1 Software User Manual (SUM)

The SUM is a basic instruction manual intended for the end user. It is written as a fundamental learning tool for the project deliverables. In order to help the user in learning the basic program features, the SUM should list all product entities the user would possibly see in the operation of the product.
