Managing Software Deliverables: A Software Development Management Methodology

The Customer Support phase represents a formal handoff from the development team to organizational MIS or IT support. The associated documents and steps in this phase provide formal procedures for ensuring proper knowledge transfer has been completed between the two parties. First, as always, let s look at the SEP Phase VII roadmap (Figure 8.1).
Six significant tasks are necessary for the Core Team to work on in this phase. Just as in every phase, the review of the deliverables checklist is first. The Phase VII Deliverables Checklist appears as Figure 8.2. We cover each of these six areas in the following paragraphs.
The Software Transition Plan transitions the software from the development phase to the user support phase. It should include plans for handing off the server and user support to the appropriate departments in the organization. It is an outline of how to transfer the entire system to a state of production environment operations. The plan should verify that all of the system elements are successfully transferred into production libraries. The plan should ensure that the various system manuals are distributed to the official user and systems department representatives. The recipient of the system must turn on or stand up the production system and verify if its level of operability is adequate. Then, the system will be turned over to the users for their use.
