Managing Software Deliverables: A Software Development Management Methodology

10.8: Choosing a Development Strategy

10.8 Choosing a Development Strategy

I certainly would not advocate using a hammer to put a thumbtack in a wall. Likewise, with project deliverables, it is often not necessary to constitute a full-blown project team and incur the additional costs for implementing something simple. Of course, you want standardized processes to be followed, you want to be able to account for all resources and expenses, and you want to know that the job will get done correctly. There is a middle ground. It is unreasonable to hold the development of a simple utility to sort business records to the same level of scrutiny that you would the implementation of a new expense-processing module in your financial system. Is it possible to use the same processes, even at a generalized level, to accomplish both tasks? Yes! It is done by using project tailoring techniques, which are explained later in this chapter.
