People in the business need to understand the reasons behind the effort required to achieve Class A performance levels in inventory location balance records. Step one is education. The source of this education can be from outside experts, canned video education, detail courses, APICS, etc. This may be the most important step as you prepare for high- performance inventory accuracy.
Once the education is started, the next step of understanding the existing process can begin. This step normally begins with the acknowledgment of inventory flow through the plant or facility. Map the entire flow through the process and define the controlled areas (inventory that is held in an area for more than twenty-four hours) and where inventory normally is stored.
Determine the transactions that are done today and the transactions that should be done to best serve the needs of accuracy. The next sequential step is to list the people who do these transactions and then compare that to a list of people certified to do these specific transactions. Actions should result from this exercise.
