TABLE OF CONTENTS Many of the methods described in this volume require the use of data for failure and other events. This appendix gives a brief account of such data and a selection of references, which have been published in the open literature.
The data are given in summary form and primarily for illustrative purposes only. It is emphasized that there are many factors that determine the failure rates of equipment and the range of failure rates observed can be quite wide. It should be borne in mind that the same data are often quoted by a number of references. The existence of several sets of data that are in agreement is not necessarily evidence of the validity of the data. For industrial reliability work, therefore, it is necessary to consult the original literature and to make appropriate use of data banks and plant data.
