How to Cheat at Managing Windows Small Business Server 2003

Preparing for Installation

Chapter 2 walked you through most of the planning phases needed to get ready to install SBS 2003. However, there are a few more things we need to cover before we insert the CD (or DVD) and start the install.

There are essentially three ways to install SBS:

  1. You can install SBS on a new server or install it on an existing server overwriting any previous operating system (clean install). All previous settings are lost, which is why it s called a clean install even when it s not on a brand new server.

  2. You can upgrade from a previous version of SBS or other upgradeable Windows operating systems (upgrade). We ll review which operating systems can be upgraded to SBS 2003 in the upgrade section of this chapter.

  3. You can move your existing domain onto a new server (migrate). This is typically done in conjunction with upgrading from an older operating system to SBS 2003, particularly when the older operating system is one that cannot be directly upgraded to SBS 2003.

In this section, you ll learn more about each of these three methods so that you can choose which is the right path for your organization.
