In this chapter, you ll learn about basic and advanced disk terminology and concepts, in case you re not familiar with how disks work, especially in the server environment. We ll also look at specific ways to manage the disks in your Windows Small Business Server 2003 (SBS) server. When you ve finished this chapter, you will have an understanding of disk management and your server disks will be configured to meet your organization s needs.
Disk drive and disk management concepts range from simple to complex. In this section, you ll learn some of the common terminology and definitions related to disks and disk management. In later sections, you ll learn the basic concepts and a few advanced concepts related to disk management. That will lay the foundation for successfully managing your disk drives in the SBS environment, which we ll discuss later in the chapter. There are a lot of options available today for managing your SBS disks and the choices you make can increase network (or server) performance and provide fault tolerance.
