By the end of this chapter, you ll have a good understanding of the various methods used to connect to the network remotely. These include dial-up and Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections as well as wireless connections. You ll learn about certificates and how they fit into a remote access environment as well as how to effectively manage certificates in your network. You ll also learn about the Remote Web Workplace (RWW), what it is, and how it provides a great alternative to traditional remote access methods.
If you configured Remote Access via the To Do List earlier, you ve already seen some of the remote access options you have in Windows Small Business Server 2003 (SBS). In Chapter 9, we looked at the Routing and Remote Access Server (RRAS) console to look at network address translation and firewall settings (if you are using the internal SBS firewall). In this chapter, we ll look more specifically at the remote access part of RRAS.
Traditionally, remote access was accomplished via dial-up lines using a modem (or modem bank) on the server and a modem in the remote computer, such as a laptop or home computer.
