Migrating to Small Business Server 2003

The migration option is used when you want to upgrade the software from an operating system that cannot be directly upgraded to SBS 2003 and/or you want to use a new server. Since an installation of any Microsoft operating system is specific to the hardware it s installed on, you can t simply back up your data on one system and restore it to another. Well, in some instances, if the original server is completely disabled and the new server is very similar (same processor, motherboard chip set, and mass storage controller, among other things), you may be able to get away with it, but you ll almost always run into problems you have to address and there s no guarantee it will work. As with a clean install or an upgrade, migrating requires thorough planning. Review the steps for clean install and upgrade since many of them are relevant to the migration process.
