Appendix A: K-business Readiness Assessment

Overview

This short assessment gives you an indication of your readiness to launch a k-business. It considers five factors - knowledge management maturity, e-business capabilities, customer and market knowledge, knowledge asset potential, and marketing innovativeness. The questions can be considered from the perspective of an organization as a whole or from that of an individual unit. Column headings represent scores from 1 to 4. Make a judgement as to how far along the scoring scale you are, guided by the response shown in the respective columns. If you haven't even started to address a question, then score 0! Compare and contrast your ratings with those of your colleagues.

Score interpretations are given for each factor at the end of each set of questions. These interpretations suggest areas for attention. Combine the scores from each of the five sections to give a general k-business assessment (out of 100). The overall score can be broadly interpreted as follows:

  • <20: Your organization may have dabbled here and there, but needs to take a more serious look at the knowledge agenda and the Internet if it wants to prosper in the knowledge economy. Embark on a general programme of education and awareness.

  • 21 40: There are likely to be pockets of excellence in some of the core activities needed for a k-business, but they are mostly addressed in an ad-hoc manner.
