Introduction

Even if everything else works perfectly, a user will not be happy if printing fails. Printing is one of the few outputs that a computer provides. It gives users valuable hardcopy versions of the work they produce. As such, the printing function is extremely important to users.

In the three-tier architecture of a Citrix MetaFrame XP solution, printing is a complex process. Local printers are connected to the client; some printers are connected to the server; others are available on the network. In addition, the user s session must recognize the printer before its applications can print.

Understanding printing is your first step toward being able to successfully configure and troubleshoot the printing process. Even though an administrator configures printing when first deploying Citrix MetaFrame, you need to constantly manage the print environment, ranging from updating print drivers to managing the print queue.

Defining Printer Terminology

We must define printer terminology before we can get into more details about configuring your printing environment in MetaFrame XP. Printer terminology is often confusing because of the repeated use of the word print thus using a term to define it. Here is a list that will help you brush up on printing terminology:
