Network Monitoring

Network Monitor, or NetMon, is a network diagnostic tool that is bundled with Windows NT and Windows 2000. The version that ships with NT and Windows 2000 is the lite version; the full version is a component of Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS). Network Monitor is used to monitor network traffic and troubleshoot network-related events such as a server that is sending or receiving an inordinate amount of traffic or poorly configured workstations, printers, and servers. Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM), a recent standalone offering from Microsoft, is now the system-monitoring package of choice. SMS and MOM two products are similar in that they both automatically deploy agents in order to monitor systems, but whereas SMS focuses on hardware and software inventory and deployment, MOM s primary duty is to monitor the health of your systems and to let you know when something is amiss. MOM can be used to monitor Windows 2000, NT, Novell, UNIX, and Lotus Notes servers.

NetMon provides a graphical display of LAN statistics such as:

  • A portion of the data being sent

Network Monitor is able to do all this by collecting...
