Backup and Recovery

No matter how careful you are, things can and will go wrong. It s just a matter of time. All you can do is take every precaution possible and have an arsenal of tools ready to combat whatever problems occur. Backing up your servers, including the Registries and data stores, on a regular basis can be your saving grace in the event of a disaster. However, a few other tools are available that can definitely make your life easier. Windows 2000 includes a few new or improved features, and there are several third-party utilities that can help as well. We start by discussing the various backup strategies, then move on to a few other tools that would make great additions to your administration tool kit.

Backup Strategies for Standalone Servers

System backups can be a real lifesaver, especially when you are backing up a file server. Where data is concerned, backing up and restoring is usually a breeze. Application servers, however, are a different matter. Not only must you be sure to back up the system, you must back up the Registry and update your backups every time you make changes to the server. If you are lucky, your server will not change much once you have installed the applications. There are the occasional service packs, hotfixes, and patches, but these do not happen every day.
