GLOSSARY

Anisotropy, Plastic: The condition where the pipe material yields at different stress levels in different directions. For example, pipelines often have different yield stresses in the axial and circumferential directions.
Barrel of Oil (bbl): Oil volume is measured in barrels. One barrel has 42 US gal (1591).
Bauschinger Effect: Early yielding and rounding of a stress-strain response on unloading and reverse loading from a tensile or compressive stress state.
Bifurcation Buckling: A mathematical term that describes the point at which a previously unique solution bifurcates into two possible solutions.
Buckling: The process of switching from a stiff and structurally sound configuration to one that is less stiff and often dangerous. Elastic buckling implies that the structure buckles while the material is still linearly elastic. Plastic buckling implies that at buckling the material is either partially or fully plasticized.
Buckle Arrestor: Circumferential stiffener placed at regular intervals along a pipeline with the purpose of arresting a propagating buckle and limiting the damage to the distance between two adjacent arrestors (usually several hundred feet apart).
Casing: Tubular structure used for lining oil wells.
Catenary Riser: A freely suspended pipe that connects a pipeline or a well on the sea floor to a facility above the surface of the sea, in the process acquiring a catenary shape.
Cathodic Protection: System that reduces the external corrosion of a pipeline by regulating the electrical potential between the steel and its environment.
