Now the work begins! Chapter 4 will address the subject of PMO implementation planning. Assuming that the review of the detailed business case was successful and permission to proceed with the PMO implementation has been obtained, it is now time to make the PMO a reality in the organization. Numerous details must be addressed in order to start-up a PMO. Some of these are very practical, straightforward matters such as securing phone lines for the desks that the PMO staff will utilize or obtaining access to trade publications or associations that address topics relevant to project management and PMOs so that the PMO staff can stay up-to-date on trends in project and PMO management. Other areas, however, address more tactical and strategic aspects of implementation and start-up and seek to ensure that a solid foundation for long-term PMO success will be built. For the purposes of Chapter 4, attention to the base administrative matters that must be considered when starting up the PMO will be kept to a minimum. Topics of a more strategic and tactical nature, such as developing a PMO communications plan or identifying key stakeholder groups and stakeholder needs, will be discussed in greater detail to provide a perspective on some of the key areas that are important to fully address as part of implementation and start-up planning.
