The Performance Manager

What is a SMART Objective?

Objectives are like road maps. They help us to:

  • define where we want to go

  • plan the most appropriate route

  • check to see how close we are to our final destination

  • confirm that we have arrived.

You may use either objective, aim, target, goal or outcome to describe a statement which summarizes what an organization, a team or an individual is hoping to achieve. These words are all interchangeable, and mean the same thing. For the sake of simplicity, we are using the word objective throughout this workbook.
