Using Objectives at an Operational Level

For any manager wishing to achieve a specific outcome, the first step is to clarify and write down the objectives. This should done regardless of whether the outcome is related to a specific project or related to a broader ongoing aspect of activity:

  • By 30 January 2005, customer database to be updated to include everyone who has purchased since 1 January 2000

  • Carry out total stock inventory by 22 January 2005

  • Ensure that the weekly team meetings are attended by every team member who is on site that day

  • Speed the flow of information though the department so that everyone has the relevant data by 10 a.m. each Monday morning.

The next step is to break down each objective into a series of separate tasks.

ACTIVITY 12

For the purpose of this activity, assume that you have been given the following objective:

  • By the end of January 2005, and within existing budget, update our fleet of company cars, ensuring that all new vehicles are fitted with ABS and air-bags. Your task is to:
