Overview

A Civil Engineer registered prior to January 1, 1982 may practice LAND SURVEYING provided that Civil Engineer is fully competent and proficient to do so. Also, any registered Civil Engineer may practice ENGINEERING SURVEYING, as defined in the following:

1. Location, relocation, establishment, reestablishment, or retracement of the alignment or elevation for any of the fixed works embraced within the practice of civil engineering.

2. Determination of the configuration or contour of the earth's surface, or the position of fixed objects thereon or related thereto, by means of measuring lines and angles, and applying the principles of trigonometry or photogrammetry.

United States Public Land Surveys:

Township is the primary unit for the subdivision of public lands. It is approximately 6 miles square and bounded by meridians and parallels of latitude. The township is divided into 36 sections, each approximately 1 mile square.

The township is located with respect to principal axes passing through an origin called an Initial Point. Through this point, the north-south axis is a true meridian called the Principal Meridian, and the east-west axis is a parallel of latitude called the Base Line.

A row of townships extending north-south is called a Range (R), and a row extending east-west is called a Tier (T). For example, T2S, R3W, 4th PM designates a township in the second tier south of the base line and the third range west of the fourth principal meridian.
