Electrical Engineering Problems and Solutions, Eighth Ed

EXAM STYLE

Currently, the eight-hour PE exam contains essay or free-response type questions in the four-hour a.m. session and multiple choice questions in the four-hour p.m. session. Multiple-part problems are designed so that the solution of one part does not depend upon the correct solution of a previous part. Four of twelve problems must be worked during each session.

Essay problems are presented as a "Situation" and "Requirements". The situation describes the environment in which an engineer might find himself when presented with a practical problem soon after becoming registered. The requirements define what is expected in response to the problem usually calculations and/or conclusions which demonstrate good engineering judgement. Partial credit is given to essay type problems. For selected problems the grader is instructed within narrow guidelines by a scoring plan as to how partial credit is to be awarded.

Multiple-choice problems consist of ten questions, each having five possible answers. An engineering scenario is presented at the start of each multiple-choice problem.

Probably the most difficult aspect of preparing and administering the PE exam is establishing a passing score which reflects a standard of minimum competency. Each jurisdiction is free to establish its minimum competency level for licensure. As an aid, the NCEES defines minimum competency for the examination component of the licensing process as follows:

"The lowest level of knowledge at which a person can practice professional engineering in such a manner that will safeguard life, health and property and promote the public welfare."
