TABLE OF CONTENTS This chapter will discuss industrial engineering (IE) in government. It concentrates on the U.S. federal government. However, in line with the international theme of the Handbook, we include a case study about the federal courts in Austria to show that IE is applicable beyond the U.S. federal government. In this chapter, we:
Give a definition of the types of government organizations and some of their characteristics.
Provide some history of IE in the U.S. federal government. The history shows a continuous stream of stimuli for IE services coming from the Executive Office or from Congress.
Present several case studies to illustrate the application of IE approaches in government. One discusses the development of staffing requirements for the Austrian federal courts. Another discusses the application of IE at the Kennedy Space Center, a part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). A postal case study is also given.
