Introduction to Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA): Network, Services, Technologies, and Operation

Analog Control Channel

Analog control channels (ACC) are used for the transmission of control signaling information between a base station and a mobile radio. The types of information that is transferred on an analog control channel include system identification information, access control parameters, paging messages, and channel assignment messages.

System broadcast information includes system identification (SID) and access control parameters. The reception of the SID allows the mobile device to determine if it is operating in its home system or in a visited system. Access control parameters include the initial and maximum transmitted power level a mobile device can use when it attempts to access the system.

The paging channel is used to send incoming call alert messages (page messages) to the mobile device. When the mobile device attempts to access the system (for a call origination or as a response to a page message) via the access channel, the control channel is used to send channel assignment message. This directs the mobile device to an analog voice channel.

Figure 1.6 shows the AMPS control channel pairs are used to transfer system broadcast information along with system access control This example shows that the forward control channel can send broadcast information, paging messages, and channel assignment messages. The reverse control channel is used to coordinate mobile access requests to the system.
