Introduction to Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA): Network, Services, Technologies, and Operation

CDMA mobile terminals are uniquely identified by the mobile identification number (MIN), mobile directory number (MDN), electronic serial number (ESN), and a temporary mobile station identity (TMSI). In addition they may be assigned temporary IP addresses as required.
The mobile identification number (MIN) is a 10-digit number that represents a mobile telephones (mobile station) identity. It is divided into MIN1 and MIN2. MIN1 is the 7 digit portion of the number. MIN2 is the 3 digit area code portion of the number.
A mobile directory number (MDN) is a number that can be dialed through the public telephone network. A full mobile directory number contains the country code, national designation code, and subscriber number and it can be up to 15 digits. For the IS-95 CDMA system, the MIN and MDN are the same number.
The electronic serial number (ESN) is a permanently stored 32 bit number within the mobile device to uniquely identify the device to the system. ESNs are transmitted from the mobile device to the system when it attempts to access (get service from) the system. The ESN is divided into 8 bits that identify the manufacturer, 18 bits that are a serial number assigned by the manufacturer, and 6 bits that are reserved. The binary ESNs are typically expressed as an 11 digit number instead of the 32 bit binary number.
