Introduction to Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA): Network, Services, Technologies, and Operation

Control Signaling

Signaling process of transferring control information such as address, call supervision, or other connection information between communication equipment and other equipment or systems. For the CDMA system, control channel signaling occurs on the separate pilot, synchronization, paging, and access control channels before calls are setup. When a call is in progress, the CDMA channel either replaces the speech information (blank and burst) or mixes in the control information (dim and burst) with low-speed speech frames.

For the AMPS system, control channel signaling is performed on a separate radio channel. When a call is in progress, the audio (FM signal) is replaced with control information.

Blank and Burst Signaling

Blank and burst signaling is a process of sending control messages between telecommunications devices where control data temporarily mutes voice or user data and replaces it with a control message. This is also known as in-band signaling.

Blank and burst signaling on the CDMA radio channel is the process of replacing a 20 msec speech frame with a control message. Because a 20 msec time period is relatively short and the audio information in one 20 msec speech frame is likely to be the same as the previous speech frame, the speech coder may replace the lost speech information with the previous speech frame instead of muting the audio signal.

Figure 1.25 shows the basic process of blank and burst signaling used in the CDMA system. This diagram shows that a control message replaces a frame of speech information. The information that...
