The origins of ISO 9001 are summarized by Donald W. Marquardt in an early version of The ISO 9000 Handbook. 1 In 1959, the Department of Defense published the MIL-Q-9858 quality management program. This program was adopted in principal in 1968 by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and published as the AQAP1, AQAP4, and AQAP9 series of standards. In 1979, the British Standards Institution released commercial versions of these standards as BS 5750 Parts 1, 2 2, and 3.
