Land Treatment Systems for Municipal and Industrial Wastes

Land treatment, in many ways, was rediscovered for treatment of industrial wastewater. In 1934, corn and pea canning wastewater was reported to be applied successfully using the ridge and furrow method in Hampton, Iowa.6 In addition to food-processing wastewaters, pulp and paper, chemical, fertilizer, meat processing, dairy, brewery, and winery wastewaters have been land applied successfully for many years.12 ,36 ,49 The wide variety of industrial wastewaters that have been land applied is illustrated in Table 13.1.
