daily cell meeting

run by the supervisor of a cell, it is a short meeting to monitor daily work and reports, go over critical issues, share information from the management, and suggest improvement ideas.

decentralization

placing the authority and the right to make decisions as far down and as far out in the organization as possible. See empowerment.

decision tree

a graphic decision-making tool to analyze the costs and utility of alternative choices so that the best choices can be made. The decision tree diagram takes the collected data and uses symbols and diverging lines (branches) to show the impact or result of each choice. See business process tools for links to other tools.

dedicated line

a production line that serves the processing or assembly of only one part or product. Contrast with joint line.

defect

nonconformance in a product or part, or departure of quality from the intended effect. In mistake-proofing terminology, a defect is not the same as an error. A defect is the result of an error.

de-layering

removing excessive levels of supervision and management from the organization to delegate more decision-making to the level where the work is being done. See empowerment.
