The complex planning process begins with someone initiating a work request. A work request, once approved, will be converted to a work order. A work request system requires an identifier for the work request, so that when the work request is converted to a work order, it can be tracked. In some enterprise asset management systems, particularly SAP, the work request is known as a notification.
The work request also will require data such as the necessary piece of equipment or asset and where the work needs to be performed. Therefore, some type of equipment numbering system will need to be in place, one that is easily accessible or usable by individuals requesting the work. In a facility, the identifier may be known as a building/floor/room locator. The identifier highlights the location or piece of equipment where the work needs to be performed. In some enterprise asset management systems, particularly SAP, this number may also be known as a functional location.
To process a work request properly, the type of work being requested or a reason for the work will also be required. This information will help the planners properly evaluate the work request. If possible, the requester should use a coding system to help identify the problem and, if possible, the cause of the problem.
