Chapter 10: The Work Execution Process

Overview

Work execution is the process of carrying out planned maintenance work while following an established schedule. Once the work is assigned, the completion of the work is the responsibility of the maintenance technicians. All work that is performed should be in accordance with accepted, good maintenance practices. By following good maintenance practices, the maintenance technicians are able to enhance the reliability of the equipment and eliminate rework.

The MRO storeroom personnel provide kitting and staging of parts and materials for scheduled work orders. Spare parts that are available and ready when required enhance the ability of maintenance technicians to execute the work. In some plants, a process for the delivery of the MRO spare parts to the worksite is in place and appropriately utilized. This process eliminates work delays due to travel time to obtain spare parts. A provision should be in place to return to MRO inventory any spare parts left over after the task is completed.

Supervisors should consider several issues when making work assignments. For example, after reviewing the work order, the supervisor may ask:

  • What level of experience is required to complete the work?

  • Do I need an experienced craft technician or can an apprentice perform the assignment?

  • Do I have someone on my crew who needs experience performing a certain task?

  • Are there specialty skills required to perform this job?

  • Is a technician with those skills available on this shift?
