Mastering Revit Architecture 2008

Chapter 14: Evaluating Your Preliminary Design Sustainability

Overview

In this chapter, we will take our preliminary building model and investigate sustainable design strategies using the building information model.

There are a number of things Revit does to support a sustainable design process and workflow that range from accurate material takeoffs to full-blown energy analysis. As you move to Revit from a more traditional drafting approach you will begin to see more opportunities to engage in model-based simulation. This represents a shift in office workflow and culture. Revit changes how teams communicate since everyone works within the same file instead of multiple files. This reality extends to the rest of the project team, including structural, mechanical, engineering, and plumbing (MEP) consultants using Revit. This close integration allows team members to better understand the overall direction of the project from many vantage points. This ability to see the model from different points of view makes a BIM project perfect for exploring sustainable design strategies.

In this chapter, we will explore how Revit can help support those strategies. You ll learn to do the following:

  • Incorporate a sustainable approach from project inception

  • Use Revit to track sun and shade patterns

  • Track recycled materials and other sustainable strategies using schedules

Sustainability in Architecture

Sustainable design has been a long-standing practice among the architectural profession, but it has recently received mainstream recognition and grown in popularity. Sustainable design can address many issues, such as energy use, access to natural light, human health and productivity, water conservation, use of recycled materials the...
