The Radioman's Manual of RF Devices, Principles and Practices

There are many pieces of test equipment that are used in test and measurement work in RF communications. Some of the more important ones deserve some special attention. This chapter covers the main instruments with which a technician or other interested persons should be familiar.
A communications analyzer (or service monitor in some circles) provides multiple test features, i.e., although some of these boxes are quite large and heavy, this is better than having to deal with several different pieces of equipment. There are many different pieces of test equipment used in the testing and repair of radio equipment. Dragging all of them around in the field would be too cumbersome. Many years ago, the manufacturers of test equipment finally integrated the most frequently used test equipment into a single box.
Photo 4 1 shows a communications analyzer. This instrument is quite versatile. Some of the features are:
Spectrum analyzer
Tracking generator
SINAD meter
Distortion analyzer
Audio frequency meter
RF frequency meter
FM deviation meter
AM modulation meter
Digital oscilloscope
RF Signal generator
Audio signal generator
Encoder
Decoder
RF power meter
Audio power meter
Special options
Aural monitoring of the demodulated signal
These are just a few of the features of this instrument. Although the spectrum analyzer feature is not...
