Plumbing fixtures found in most bathrooms include a toilet, a lavatory, and a bathing unit. There are many types of fixtures that fall into these categories. Some other fixtures that might be encountered are bidets and whirlpool tubs. There are three basic types of lavatories to consider using in a bathroom. The least expensive, and usually the least desirable, type is a simple, wall-hung lavatory. This type of fixture is functional, but it is not pretty. If you plan to have a wall-hung lavatory installed, you must have a sturdy piece of backing in the wall cavity, behind the wallcovering, to bolt the lavatory hanger to. If this backing is not already in place, you will have to open the wall to install it.
Most homeowners prefer vanities with molded lavatory tops on them. These units are much more attractive and offer the utility of some storage space. Another advantage to using a vanity is that it can hide marks on a wall where an existing lavatory was removed.
