Signal Processing Using Optics: Fundamentals, Devices, Architectures, and Applications

Appendix B: Annotated Bibliography

A listing with comments of most well-known and recent books on optical signal processing and Fourier optics is provided in this appendix.

Fourier Optics, J. W. Goodman, McGraw-Hill, New York (1968)

This is probably the most famous text in the field of Fourier optics. It is a seminal text by a nationally and internationally known expert in the field. It emphasizes the basics of physical optics, Fourier transform properties of lenses, traditional coherent optical processing techniques, and holography. Many challenging problem exercises are provided for the student. This text is very appropriate as a prerequisite for more advanced courses in optics including advanced optical signal processing.

Optical Information Processing, Optical Signal Processing, Fourier Optics, F. T. S. Yu, John Wiley & Sons, New York (1983)

This is another book that covers much of Fourier optics with applications to signal processing, again by a well-known expert in the field. There is extensive coverage of holography, especially polychromatic and noncoherent techniques, as well as a considerable number of problems.

Optical Processing, Computing, and Neural Networks, F. T. S.Yu, and S. Jutamulia, John Wiley & Sons, New York (1992)

This is among several recent textbooks on optical signal processing and computing. It is similar to Yu's previous work, but goes further by including optical computing and neural networks, as well as more current topics. Extensive homework problems are included.

Principles of Optical Engineering, F. T. S. Yu. John Wiley & Sons, New York (1990)
