Wireless Broadband Handbook

Chapter 8: Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs)

The market for wireless communications has enjoyed tremendous growth. Wireless technology now reaches or is capable of reaching virtually every location on the face of the earth. Hundreds of millions of people exchange information every day using pagers, cellular telephones, and other wireless communication products. With the tremendous success of wireless telephony and messaging services, it is hardly surprising that wireless communication is beginning to be applied to the realm of personal and business computing. No longer bound by the harnesses of wired networks, people will be able to access and share information on a global scale nearly anywhere they venture.

Wireless Local Area Networks

Looking at all of the possible combinations of a broadband wireless architecture includes finding opportunities to ramp up the speeds on the local area network (LAN). Mobile communications and now, the mobile data networking, are two of the areas where transmission is contingent upon the following:

  • Distances from the cell

  • Interference from other devices in the environment

  • Power output capabilities of the mobile set

  • Overall distance/speed ratio for the mobile device

Each of these factors will have a direct impact upon the speed and reliability of the data throughput in a mobile communicating service. However, the use of high-speed communications in the mobile environment, as shown in the previous chapters, was on an overall transmission of up to 2 Mbps with Universal Mobile Telephone System (UMTS). Yet, the speeds for mobile devices today equates to 64 to 384 Kbps,...
