Introduction

Motors in the future will continue to be found in almost every kind of electrical and electronic equipment. The concept of harnessing rotating magnetic fields is still evolving, since new types of motors such as switched reluctance are just now being introduced in appliances. Electronics technology, especially microcontrollers, will allow even further advances in motor designs and their controllers. The standard AC induction motor has traditionally been designed to operate from a fixed AC line voltage and frequency. With the advent of cost-effective motor control electronics, the AC power line will no longer be the prime factor in designing motors. Since electronics can generate higher frequencies and variable power levels to match the motor's exact load requirements, smaller and lighter motors may be possible.

There are several possible motor designs that can employ high-technology components that have yet to be fully developed. One is an ultrafast motor a motor that would operate at RF speeds. Another is a smart motor control that can adapt or be easily programmed or trained for specific applications. In this chapter we will discuss some possible futuristic motor designs and technology advances that may affect motor control designs.

18.1 Impact of Future Technology on Motor Control

It is amazing how quickly technology is advancing, especially in microelectronics. The use of finer geometries and multilayer metalization is increasing the density of microcontroller devices, as well as improving their price/performance ratio. It is...
