Description

Mass flow meter flow transmitters are devices used to measure the mass flow rate of a fluid traveling through a tube. They provide a direct measurement of the mass flow, which is crucial for various industrial processes where precise fluid control is necessary.

Working Principle

Mass flow meters operate on different principles, with the most common being the Coriolis and thermal dispersion methods. Coriolis flow meters use a vibrating tube, where the flow of fluid causes changes in frequency or phase shift proportional to the mass flow rate. This method is highly accurate and unaffected by changes in pressure, temperature, and viscosity . Thermal mass flow meters, on the other hand, apply the thermal dispersion principle, measuring the mass flow rate directly by detecting changes in temperature as the fluid passes through the sensor .

Applications

Mass flow meters are widely used in various industrial sectors. For example, Coriolis mass flow meters are often applied in industries requiring the measurement of sanitary and corrosive but relatively clean gases . Thermal mass flow meters are used in refinery flare gas monitoring to improve accuracy .

Advantages over other Flow Transmitters

Coriolis mass flow meters offer true mass flow measurement and are unaffected by pressure, temperature, and viscosity changes, which makes them highly reliable in diverse conditions . They do not require inlet and outlet sections, simplifying installation and reducing space requirements . Thermal mass flow meters provide direct mass flow measurement without needing additional devices to measure temperature and pressure, which simplifies the system and reduces potential points of failure .

Limitations

Coriolis mass flow meters can be expensive, especially in larger line sizes, and often require costly bypass piping systems for field maintenance . They are also susceptible to inaccuracies due to environmental vibrations . Thermal mass flow meters, while generally robust, may have limitations in extremely low-flow liquid applications .

Considerations

When considering mass flow meters, initial costs can be high, particularly for Coriolis meters due to their complex design and installation requirements . Operating expenses may vary depending on the specific application and maintenance needs. Durability is generally high, but environmental factors such as vibrations can affect accuracy . Replacement and maintenance costs should be considered, especially for systems requiring bypass piping or frequent recalibration .
