Chapter 2 - Trends And Technologies For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

2.1. INTRODUCTION

The possibilities presented by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have beckoned
researchers, military planners and aviation enthusiasts for years. With
just a little imagination, one could envision UAVs taking over a host of
duties, resulting in numerous benefits. It is thought that UAVs can be used
to good advantage in certain situations that are very tedious or present undue
danger for pilots. These situations are commonly summed up as the ‘‘dull,’’
the ‘‘dirty,’’ and the ‘‘dangerous.’’ UAV advocates also tout cost savings and
other expected benefits.

UAVs are now beginning to realize some of their potential. They are
making definite inroads in surveillance and reconnaissance applications and
advancing in other areas as well. In this chapter we examine some of the
historical background of UAVs and the motivation behind the push to
develop UAVs. We review a number of UAV development efforts and their
difficulties, and we examine some current UAVs and their successes as well
as take a brief look at the future.
