Chapter 14 - Visual Psychophysics with Adaptive Optics

Psychophysics is the study of the relations between human performance and
physical stimulus variables. For nearly 200 years, visual psychophysicists have
worked to quantify these relations for visual tasks and light stimuli. Vision
scientists combine psychophysical techniques with measures of anatomy and
physiology to gain an understanding of how the visual system processes information.
To the extent that adaptive optics (AO) approaches diffraction-limited
correction of the optics of the eye, it offers an exciting new tool for addressing
fundamental questions about human vision. Bypassing the aberrations of the
eye with AO, psychophysicists will be able to present precisely controlled
stimuli directly to the visual nervous system. This will help address questions
about the relative contributions of optical and neural factors in defining the
limits of visual performance, as well as fundamental questions about neural
information processing. Additionally, combining physiological and anatomical
data from AO-based imaging techniques with measures of visual performance,
vision scientists will be able to advance further the understanding of
the relation between form and function in the visual nervous system.

This chapter is a short introduction to psychophysics and psychophysical
methods. A comprehensive treatment of these topics would be impossible in
a single chapter. Instead, key terms, concepts, and techniques for designing
and implementing psychophysical experiments are introduced, with an emphasis
on information relevant in the context of AO. The first part of the chapter
describes the notion of a psychophysical function and introduces a few examples.
The second part of the chapter addresses psychophysical methods—
experimental techniques for measuring psychophysical functions. Finally, the
third part describes some of the equipment and procedures for producing
visual stimuli for psychophysical experiments.
