2.2   THE PARTICLE NATURE OF LIGHT

Electromagnetic fields with electric field E and magnetic field H have an energy
flux density F calculated as

 

The momentum of the field is calculated as

 

Now, when this field is absorbed by a surface, the momentum transmitted normally
to the unit of surface in the unit of time is the pressure exerted on it. Thus,
light, like nuclear particles, exerts pressure and causes a wheel to spin (Figure
2.3). As a consequence, light is also described in terms of the number of particles
or photons, the smallest quantity of monochromatic light, described by the energy
(E) equation:

 E = hv

where h is Planck’s constant, 6.6260755 × 10-34 (Joule-second), and v is the frequency
of light (hertz).

In free space, light (of all wavelengths) travels in a straight path at a constant
maximum speed. However, the speed of light changes when it travels in a medium,
and this change is not the same for all media or for all wavelengths. By free space is
meant space that is completely free from matter (absolute vacuum) and from electromagnetic
fields. Frequency, v, speed of light in free space, c, and wavelength, λ,
are interrelated by:

 v = c/λ
