Chapter 12: Planning to Train: Reader Exercise

This exercise will allow you, as the security educator, to become engaged in the actual development of an education and training session for your employees. Understanding the thought process, and then turning that process into action on your part allows for the full development of a training exercise from which your employees learn specific skills, understand rules and procedures applicable to the skills, and ensure the process is properly performed.

Given a detailed description of a performance problem in a security program, the reader will perform a basic front-end analysis, decide on an intervention strategy, and develop a "plan of attack" outline for the training. The exercise describes a skills/knowledge problem that is not amenable to job aiding.

Upon completion of this exercise, you should be able to do the following:

  • Identify problems within a security program that result in poor employee understanding, interpretation, and performance of duties.

  • Select one or more appropriate strategies to attack and defeat the problem.

  • Develop an outline for job aids to assist employees (these aids must also educate and train them).

Problem: During the past two months, you have determined by reviewing the files concerning 11 security infractions that personnel are not aware of how to properly transmit or transport classified or company sensitive information within or outside your organization. Close review indicates the following:

  1. Addressing is poor, wrong, or inconsistent with requirements and local procedures.
