Appendix A: Focus Group Protocol

From time to time in larger organizations, a focus group might be an option to evaluate a forthcoming security program. This section discusses the purpose, group size, selection criteria, meeting time, and roles for focal groups. Although the administrative tasks remain relatively the same for all focus groups, the type of presentation and, thus, the objectives of the focus group change with the subject matter under discussion. In the discussion that follows, we will be using a threat-based presentation protocol. Whatever your specific presentation topic area, the objectives and specifics can easily be modified or rewritten to meet your specific needs and requirements.

Purpose

The purpose of a focus group is to obtain audience reactions to the content and presentation style of a given presentation. Through the focus group, you are attempting to glean insights into what makes for an effective presentation. You are looking for specific examples and anecdotes of what captures and holds the attention of the viewing audience, and these are what you hope to receive in terms of feedback from the focal group attendees.

Type Of Presentation Selected

Focus groups should be conducted following the more generic presentations or refresher briefings/reviews with larger audiences. If possible, avoid having to conduct a focus group following a very specific briefing with a limited number of participants (e.g., travel or specialized small-group briefings).
