3.7 The PERSEUS system architecture

We now move to explore PERSEUS [ [5], [29], [30], an open source trusted computing project, the main contributors to which include Riordan and Waidner of IBM, Pfitzmann and St ble of Saarland University and Weber from the Karlsruhe Research Centre. Their work aims to address some of the negative social, economic and technical concerns which have been raised with respect to trusted computing platforms. Of particular significance are issues regarding the loss of user control over their personal systems or personal information, and issues concerning commercial censorship. Their efforts have focused on the construction of a TP which fulfils both end-user needs and the needs of the content provider, through the integration of TCG/NGSCB hardware features with an open source security kernel which they have developed.

3.7.1 Introduction

As stated above, the fundamental motivation for the development of the PERSEUS system architecture was born from concerns regarding the power that content providers may potentially attain over a user's privacy, and the use of digital content. St ble et al. [29] point out, however, that the hardware functionality provided for by NGSCB and TCG technologies is under the control of the OS. The user can therefore benefit from its functionality and also remain protected from threats outlined above as long as the OS is indeed trustworthy, thereby preserving the interests of both the content providers and the end users.
