Windows NT Security Guide

NETWORKING FEATURES

Windows NT also has Network OLE that will more than likely be the next step for OLE/COM programming. This feature will allow you to do cross-process and in-process interaction between components. In addition, you will also have secure machine-machine interactions as well.

Mutli-Protocol Router (MPR) allows you to enable small to moderately sized sites for the purposes of launching a Windows NT server. The cost benefits are realized when used as a LAN-to-LAN routing solution as it takes away the need to maintain a dedicated router. Other features include LAN-to-LAN routing for AppleTalk, IPX/SPX, and TCP/IP.

Performance

In order for you to be able to consider network management needs, you must first think in terms of providing a reliable system architecture that is both quick and easy to implement. Whenever management must sit around waiting for any given task to run its course over the network, you lose time and money in the process. Upgrading to NT 5.0 may just alleviate those difficulties as this version has several internal performance improvements over other operating systems (see Figure 14.1).

The main direction is on both file and print sharing, these performance gains will more than likely make in much easier and simpler to carry out frequent tasks and save time in the process.

Implementation is an important step in creating the right networking environment for your organization. Windows NT has a new version of a DNS server that is part of the product instead...
