Applications of Robust Control to Nonlinear Systems

In this chapter the system model in Chapter 5, Section II, is constructed in analog circuit form as an example of the implementation aspects of nonlinear amplitude-dependent controllers.67 It is also used to demonstrate the practicality of the covered design method. The circuit is implemented on a PB 105 Proto-board using standard 15 VDC (volts direct current) components. Protoboards are solderless, generic circuit boards commonly used in the laboratory development of prototype circuits. The response signals in this chapter are generated using a Wavetek model 145,20 MHz pulse/function generator, and outputs viewed using a Tektronix SC-502, 15 MHz oscilloscope. Power is provided by an Electronic Development Corporation (EDC) model MV216A power supply. An HP-3466A digital multimeter is also used in testing the circuit. The test bench is shown in Fig. 9.1.
The circuit is constructed using inexpensive, and easily obtainable, electronic components. The main component used in implementing the elements of this circuit is the LM741 operational amplifier, which is extremely common and has been in production for many years. The LM101 operational amplifiers used in the absolute value element are closely related to the LM741. Only the Intersil 8013 four-quadrant multiplier is a special purpose chip. It is an older design, tuned using a series of small electric dash pots. The particular chip used in this circuit is surplused after removal from a scrapped SR 71 yaw damper board. A much more modern design would be an internally compensated Burr-Brown MPY643 multiplier.
