Many firms need to use external skills at some point to solve problems, carry out projects, or implement systems. It is not possible for many firms to have specialists or experts in all aspects of their business, especially production control. Each year, a lot of money is spent on consultants and since consultants are generally not cheap, you need to make sure that you get value. Many, if not most, consultants are worth their fees, but like all things in life, some are not. However, it is hard to judge from self-reported claims of success if value will be derived. In the following pages, we will share some of our thoughts on consultants, groups of consultants, and some aspects of consulting that it might be wise to think about.
There are small local firms, small national or international firms, and larger firms. Each type has strengths and weaknesses. There might even be corporate- level specialists or agencies that behave and act like consultants.
