FFPM

Fortunately for Perky Pets, Incorporated, the executive board had already embraced the concepts of FFPM and used it to incorporate a financial viewpoint in the corrective action process.

As described below, a financial viewpoint is involved from the identification of the failure through closure of quality engineering corrective actions affecting the manufacturing process.

Project Identifiers

Failures are obviously identified by the customers in this case. A little boy cries out to his mother, who is ironing in the next room: "Mommy! This penguin isn't working right! It's broken! Can you fix it?"

The mother rushes in and sees the penguin lying prostrate on its back. Its wide, unblinking eyes are glazed, its body motionless. The lad buries his tearful face in his mother's embrace. "Oh mommy," he sobs. "Can you fix it?"

The mother picks up the failed product and drives to the Penguin-in-a-Helmet warranty service organization. On her arrival she is asked to take a number from the little machine. It seems there are quite a few people in line ahead of her.

The first individuals in the company to be designated as project identifiers are the warranty service representatives. They perform the following tasks:

  1. Complete the project notice (see below).

  2. The project notice is attached to the defective Penguin-in-a-Helmet and forwarded to the quality engineering organization, which is designated the process improvement coordinator.

The above procedures are fairly routine for any situation, regardless of the company's corrective action procedure. FFPM requires the warranty service organization to perform...
